I am a Professor of History at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where I have taught since 2001. My work on teaching and learning has garnered national, state, and university awards for excellence, and I am the author of two books, more than a dozen articles and book chapters, and a variety of digital history projects. On July 1, 2017, I will begin my term as President-Elect of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
I am invited regularly to speak at conferences and universities around the world on the intersection of teaching, learning, and technology, and have held several administrative leadership positions here at George Mason, including Associate Dean in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Director of the Global Affairs program, and from 2001-2011 I was an Associate Director of our award-winning Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media. During the 2015-16 academic year, I served as the university’s Presidential Fellow. Of late I’ve been experimenting with ways to combine my own work in public digital history with my students’ desire to engage in authentic historical research that results in tangible digital products. The first example of that work, still a work in progress, is Appalachian Trail Histories.
