A One Way Ticket To Minsk

Posted on April 4, 2007 by Mills

Last fall I wrote about the Florida history standards, pointing out that they could just as easily (and perhaps more appropriately) have been written in Minsk than in Tallahassee. This is your chance to sound off on this issue, as a petition drive is now afoot to try to convince the Florida Legislature to reconsider their stance that history is just a bunch of facts to be memorized–or as one of my student’s t-shirts said many years ago, “History: It’s Just One Damned Thing After Another.”

The American Historical Association has already taken a position on this issue, but if you want to add your voice to the chorus against the Florida standards, join the petition drive. Who knows, if this fails, maybe we can buy them all a one-way ticket to Minsk.
