Local evidence of Google’s growth

Posted on February 28, 2006 by Mills

Anyone who doesn’t know that Google’s dominance of the internet search business is growing must be living in Elbonia. But what about in the history business?

A quick check of the logs at CHNM reveals just how dominating Google’s position is and how it continues to expand. I looked at which search engines were bringing traffic to our site and found that for the main URL (chnm.gmu.edu) the data are:

November
Google – 55.7%
Yahoo – 14.5%

December
Google – 57%
Yahoo – 13.9%

January
Google – 62.1%
Yahoo – 13.7%

February (through 2/26)
Google – 65%
Yahoo – 11.3%

Similarly, for one of our most popular sites — History Matters — the numbers are:

November
Google – 72.8%
Yahoo – 10.1%

February
Google – 74.5%
Yahoo – 8.6%

So, if you were a history website developer, which search engine would you be putting your efforts into getting it to index your pages?
