Tagging History

Posted on January 7, 2008January 9, 2008 by Mills

I’m writing this post from Prague where I am leading a study tour for George Mason University.

Over the last two years I’ve noticed a greater and greater volume of graffiti (mostly tagging) in the historic districts of cities like Prague and Florence. I’m not sure what it means of why it is happening, but it reminds me of the late 1980s and early 1990s in D.C. when Cool “Disco” Dan and FFC were tagging up the center of the nation’s capital.

Apparently, some in Prague are happy about the growth in tagging. Call me old fashioned, but I’d rather see the historic parts of the city be off limits to taggers.

[Addendum: Note in the comments that this post got tagged today.]

I wouldn’t call it growth, it’s the same all the time since the revoultion. And if all the spray colors were banned, the taggers would just come back to the time-proved, good old vandalism…
